On Thursday, 19 November, UnitedHealth Group announced their 2015 earnings update and initial 2016 view. As their 2016 earnings projections for the exchange segment were lower than expected, UnitedHealth Group is “evaluating the viability of the insurance exchange product segment,” as stated in the Q4 Earnings Update Release. They expect to make a decision whether to continue to offer health insurance products on the exchange in early 2016. Stephen Helmsley, UnitedHealth Group’s CEO, cited that “co-operatives have failed, and market data has signaled higher risks and more difficulties while our own claims experience has deteriorated” as reasons to consider withdrawing from the exchange. Insurers Anthem and Aetna announced in response on Friday that they will continue to maintain plans on the Exchange.
