- What is Cord Blood Awareness Month?
- Cord Blood Awareness Month is an annual health observance in July to raise awareness about (umbilical) cord blood donation and therapies.
- What is cord blood?
- The term “cord blood” is used to describe the blood that remains in the umbilical cord and the placenta after the birth of a baby. Up until recently this afterbirth was discarded as medical waste. Cord blood contains stem cells that may be cryo-preserved for later use in medical therapies, such as stem cell transplants or clinical trials of new stem cell therapies.
- Why preserve cord blood?
- Cord blood can be donated publicly to help other people in need, or families can privately bank cord blood for their own purposes.
